In dieser Kolumne stelle ich von Zeit zu Zeit einen Bildband vor, welcher mir sehr am Herzen liegt. Dabei handelt es sich nicht – oder nicht zwangsläufig – um eine Neuerscheinung. Es ist einfach ein Buch, welches mir irgendwie in die Hände gefallen ist und das ich Anderen gerne nahelegen möchte.

In this column I present from time to time a photo book that is very close to my heart. It is not – or not necessarily – a new release. It is simply a book that somehow came into my hands and that I would like to suggest to others.

Ich glaube, ich bin bisher noch nie auf ein Buch gestoßen, das mich unendlich traurig und sprachlos zurücklässt und welches dennoch auf eine kraftvolle Art und Weise trotzdem sehr viel Hoffnung und Mut verbreitet. Ich bin vor einiger Zeit durch ein YouTube-Video des britischen Fotografen Kevin Mullins auf dieses Buch aufmerksam geworden, musste jedoch einige Zeit warten, um es schließlich in den Händen halten zu dürfen – dazu später etwas mehr.

Dieses Buch ist das Ergebnis eines Langzeitprojektes – Das Julie-Projekt – der US-amerikanischen Fotografin und Fotojournalistin Darcy Padilla. Eine kurze Zusammenfassung des Inhaltes möchte ich hier einfach mit den Worten der Autorin selbst wiedergeben: “In den letzten 18 Jahren habe ich Julie Baird’s komplexe Geschichte von mehreren Wohnorten, Aids, Drogenmissbrauch, missbräuchlichen Beziehungen, Armut, Geburten, Todesfällen, Verlust und Wiedervereinigung fotografiert. Sie folgt Julie von den Gassen von San Francisco in die Hinterwälder von Alaska.”

I think I’ve never before come across a book that leaves me endlessly sad and speechless and yet in a powerful way still spreads a lot of hope and courage. I became aware of this book some time ago through a YouTube video of the British photographer Kevin Mullins, but had to wait some time to finally hold it in my hands – more about that later.

This book is the result of a long-term project – The Julie Project – by the American photographer and photojournalist Darcy Padilla. A short summary of the content I would like to present here in the words of the author herself: “For the last 18 years I have photographed Julie Baird’s complex story of multiple homes, Aids, drug abuse, abusive relationships, poverty, births, deaths, loss and reunion. Following Julie from the backstreets of San Francisco to the backwoods of Alaska.”

Diese kurze Beschreibung lässt einen schon erahnen, dass es sich nicht um leichte Kost handeln wird, was man auf den insgesamt 336 Seiten des Buches zu sehen bekommt. Und tatsächlich – ich bin praktisch vom allerersten Bild an hineingezogen worden in eine Welt, die ich mir persönlich nicht einmal ansatzweise vorstellen kann. Eine Welt, die ich irgendwie aus der Ferne – sei es durch Filme oder Reportagen – sicher auch kenne, aber eben nur aus der Ferne. Die Bilder in diesem Buch haben jedoch mit Ferne nicht das Geringeste zu tun.

This short description gives you an idea that it will not be easy to digest what you can see on the 336 pages of the book. And indeed – I was practically drawn from the very first picture into a world that I personally can’t even begin to imagine. A world that I somehow know from a distance – whether through films or reports – but only from a distance. However, the pictures in this book have nothing to do with distance at all.

An diesem Punkt muss leider ganz kurz zurückspringen zum Buch an sich. Es ist interessanterweise nicht bei einem amerikanischen Verlag erschienen, sondern in der französischen Éditions de La Martinière. Als Folge daraus sind sowohl die Einleitung als auch die beschreibenden Texte der einzelnen Lebensabschnitte von Julie in französischer Sprache verfasst. Das ist zwar tatsächlich für Menschen mit geringen Französischkenntnissen etwas schwierig, da diese Texte natürlich wichtig sind. Aber zum einen sprechen die Bilder wirklich für sich selbst und zum anderen findet man im Internet auch leicht einige Zusatzinformationen zu dieser Geschichte. Allem voran dieses Video ist dabei ein absolutes Muss – und zum Glück in Englisch.

Der zweite kleine Wehrmutstropfen: Soweit ich das sehe, ist das Buch im Prinzip vergriffen. Ich habe es durch unfassbares Glück neu und zum Originalpreis von 62,- €  im Internet irgendwo in Frankreich gefunden. Das wird sicher nicht leicht, aber zumindest ein gebrauchtes Exemplar findet man eigentlich noch recht leicht. Oder manchmal auch neu in den USA oder Großbritanien, aber dann is es oft sehr teuer. Die Suche lohnt aber in jedem Fall!

At this point, unfortunately, I have to jump back to the book itself. Interestingly, it was not published by an American publisher, but by the French Éditions de La Martinière. As a result, both the introduction and the descriptive texts of Julie’s individual life stages are written in French. This is actually a bit difficult for people with little knowledge of French, as these texts are of course important. But on the one hand the pictures really speak for themselves and on the other hand you can easily find some additional information about this story on the internet. Above all this video is an absolute must – and fortunately in English.

The second little drop of bitterness: As far as I can see, the book is basically out of print. I found it by unbelievable luck a new copy for the original price of 62, – € in the Internet somewhere in France. This will certainly not be easy, but at least a used copy can be found quite easily. Or sometimes also a new one in the USA or Great Britain, but then it’s often very expensive. The search is worth it in any case!

Aber zurück zum Wesentlichen: Warum möchte ich dieses Buch jedem – also auch Nicht-Fotografen – so sehr ans Herz legen? Ganz einfach: Es zeigt für mich die Menschlichkeit in ihrem Wesen und mit all ihren Widersprüchen – und zwar auf beiden Seiten der Kamera. Auf der einen Seite eine herzzerreißende Geschichte mit einem ständigen Wechselbad der Gefühle. Nähe und Ferne, Liebe und Gewalt, Hoffnung und Hoffnungslosigkeit, Freude und Trauer, Leben und Tod – oftmals nur wenige Seiten voneinander entfernt.

But back to the point: Why do I want to recommend this book so much to everyone – including non-photographers? Quite simply: For me, it shows humanity in its essence and with all its contradictions – on both sides of the camera. On the one hand, it’s a truly heartbreaking story with a constant roller coaster of emotions. Closeness and distance, love and violence, hope and hopelessness, joy and sadness, life and death – often only a few pages apart.

Auf der anderen Seite ist das vielleicht das Beste, was ich an dokumentarischer Fotografie je gesehen habe. Nah und direkt, mit soviel Tiefgang, offensichtlicher Empathie und Mitgefühl über viele Jahre beobachtet und zudem schlicht und ergreifend über alle Maßen grandios fotografiert. Das ist nicht das Fotobuch des Monats, das ist das Fotobuch des Jahrzehnts. Für mich ist das eine der wichtigsten Arbeiten überhaupt in diesem Sujet und ein eindrucksvolles Zeugnis sowohl für die Kraft der Fotografie als auch für die Kraft der Menschlichkeit. Denn solange es Menschen wie Darcy Padilla gibt, die so genau und so einfühlsam hinschauen, solange ist auch bei einer traurigen Geschichte noch Hoffnung da.

On the other hand, this is perhaps the best piece of documentary photography I have ever seen. Close and direct, observed over many years with so much obvious depth, empathy and compassion, and also simply and touchingly photographed grandiosely to all intents and purposes. This is not the photo book of the month, this is the photo book of the decade. For me, it is one of the most important works in this subject and an impressive testimony both to the power of photography and to the power of humanity. For as long as there are people like Darcy Padilla who look so closely and so empathetically, there is hope even in a sad story.
