Helena de Bragança – I Am Cuban

Photo book of the month

In this column I present from time to time a photo book that is very close to my heart. It is not – or not necessarily – a new release. It is simply a book that somehow came into my hands and that I would like to suggest to others.

Dezember 2018 | Helena de Bragança – I Am Cuban

It continues, the digital journey through my shelves with photo books. In the last month of the year I would like to present you a book which I have owned for a few years now and which I have not appreciated enough so far. However, it really deserves a lot of appreciation. It is the book “I Am Cuban” by Helena de Bragança.

Yes, I know… with Cuba and photography you can slip very quickly into the category “cliché”. Old and half decayed colonial buildings, an unbelievable light with great colors, lots of pretty people and old US road cruisers. We have already seen all this to our satisfaction. But the book doesn’t fall into this trap at all.

The author – with her full name Helena Kubicka de Bragança – was born in London in 1978 as the daughter of Polish-Portuguese immigrants. Influenced by the documentary “East of Havana”, she travelled the Caribbean island several times between 2007 and 2009, initially with the idea of photographing hip hop artists. However, De Bragança succeeded in penetrating very deeply into parts of Cuban society – often into the very private lives of the protagonists. The result is a fascinating and intimate portrait of a Cuba, which you as an outsider will seldom get to see.

Although the figures in her pictures often originated in the lives of the so-called “ordinary people”, it soon becomes clear where de Braganças’ stronger interest lay: on the one hand, there are the artists, musicians and writers of a new Cuban youth culture. On the other hand, there are also the outsiders of society and the places from their lives. They are prostitutes and tansvestites, homosexuals and freaks – and the stories often play in the back rooms and courtyards or in the dimmed rooms of gay and swingers clubs.

The book is not a documentary work about “The Life” in Cuba and certainly does not claim to be one. Nevertheless, Helena de Bragança has thus portrayed a certain cross-section of society very closely and intimately. And at least in my case the author managed to remind me that realities are much more complex than pictorial clichés in the mind. And that these realities usually consist of an infinite number of puzzle pieces. This book is a further proof that the camera is a possibility to create such a puzzle with a lot of time, patience, empathy and trust.
