Trent Parke – Minutes to Midnight

Photo book of the Year 2018

This is my personal photo book of the year 2018. For the book of the year, it is completely irrelevant whether it is a book from this year or perhaps a much older one. It also doesn’t matter whether it’s better, more colourful, quirkier, more beautiful, sadder or simply funnier than other books. It’s simply MY photo book of the year. And I’ll try to find a few words to explain why…

Trent Parke – Minutes to Midnight

Anyone who is interested in photography knows that neither this book is a new discovery nor Trent Parke a secret tip: the book was published 13 years ago and the Australian Trent Parke is a member of the Magnum photo agency. He is one of the most influential contemporary photographers – and his earlier work “Dream/Life” from 1998 belongs for me to the photo book dreams, whose possession I have denied for financial reasons so far. 😉

Minutes to Midnight is ostensibly the result of a road trip through Australia and two years of work. From 2003 to 2005 he travelled the continent and covered about 90.000 km. Even though he is thus stepping a good way into the tradition of great documentary photographers – let’s just think of “The Americans” by Robert Frank, for example – this book, these pictures, are still different.

Because this book is much more than “just” a documentation. It may be due to the fact that his pictures were created in a different time than some of the well-known classics. But the real reason is that Parke takes a different approach and a different view on the things. Of course, the book can be seen as an image of Australia at a certain point in time. But it goes beyond that – and that’s what I love about this book. Here documentary elements of reality on the one page merge with the surreal on the next.

One should not get the idea that these works are simply more or less random snapshots of the trained eye of a talented photographer. What looks sometimes so painterly and playful is the result of hard work and usually a very persistent process. Trent Parke has spent dozens of rolls of film and for weeks made several attempts to get his pictures 100% as he already had them in his head. Apart from the fact that I find these pictures sensational, this shows me once more how important it is to stay with them and to keep patience – not always one of my strongest virtues.

But there is a second – and for me even more important – reason why it is my favorite book of 2018. In his pictures, Trent Parke proves once again that photography is essentially about three things: light, composition and the right moment. If you mix these three things in a good proportion, you can manage to take pictures that capture people’s hearts. No more, but no less.

If there is any doubt that Trent Parke really knows these three things, then I advise you to take a look at the next picture. And of course I strongly advise you to get yourself “Minutes to Midnight” and give it a special place on the bookshelf – where you can see it well so you can pick it up again and again.

In this sense, I simply close this book presentation with the author’s words, to which there is not much to add.

I am forever chasing light. Light turns the ordinary into the magical.

Trent Parke

P.S.

Oh, yeah, and before I forget: I wish everyone out there in the world happy holidays and a very happy new year 2019!
