In dieser Kolumne stelle ich von Zeit zu Zeit einen Bildband vor, welcher mir sehr am Herzen liegt. Dabei handelt es sich nicht – oder nicht zwangsläufig – um eine Neuerscheinung. Es ist einfach ein Buch, welches mir irgendwie in die Hände gefallen ist und das ich Anderen gerne nahelegen möchte.

In this column I present from time to time a photo book that is very close to my heart. It is not – or not necessarily – a new release. It is simply a book that somehow came into my hands and that I would like to suggest to others.

Das Buch, über das ich heute kurz schreiben möchte, ist wahrscheinlich längst kein Geheimtipp mehr. Es ist in erster Auflage bereits 2004 erschienen und ich habe es auch schon seit ein oder zwei Jahren im Regal stehen – nur habe ich mir bisher nie die Zeit genommen, mich mal wirklich näher damit zu beschäftigen. Dies habe ich nun endlich nachgeholt und ich bin schlichtweg begeistert. Es ist wirklich ein unfassbar gutes Buch, dessen Bilder einen regelrecht in sich hineinziehen.

The book I would like to write about today is probably no longer an insider tip. It was published in its first edition in 2004 and I’ve had it on the shelves for a year or two – but so far I’ve never taken the time to really get to grips with it. I’ve finally made up for that and I’m simply thrilled about it. It is really an incredibly good book, whose pictures literally draw you in.

An dieser Stelle vielleicht einige wenige Worte über den Autor. Ragnar Axelsson ist ein vielfach international ausgezeichneter isländischer Fotograf, der seit den siebziger Jahren hauptsächlich dokumentarisch arbeitet. Seine große Liebe und Leidenschaft gilt dabei dem nordischen Lebensraum und vor allem den beeindruckenden Menschen, die dort unter nicht ganz einfachen Umständen leben und arbeiten. Und dieses echte Interesse merkt man dem Buch auf jeder Seite an.

At this point perhaps a few words about the author. Ragnar Axelsson is an Icelandic photographer who has received many international awards and who has been working mainly as a documentary photographer since the 1970s. His great love and passion is for the Nordic living space and above all for the impressive people who live and work there under difficult circumstances. And this genuine interest can be seen on every page of the book.

Aber nun zu dem Wesentlichen: den Bildern. Die Aufnahmen – allesamt in Schwarzweiß – in dieser Auflage des Buches aus dem Jahr 2016 sind zwischen 1986 und 2015 entstanden und wurden auf Island, Grönland und den Faroer Inseln gemacht. Und – entgegen dem, was der Titel vielleicht vermuten lässt – sind es keine hautnahen Portraits nordischer Gesichter mit wettergegerbter Haut. Es sind vielmehr emotional supernahe Bilder, die im dokumentarischen Stil – meist mit einem Weitwinkelobjektiv fotografiert – die Menschen in den Kontext ihrer Umgebung und ihres Lebens stellen und dabei gleichzeitig doch unfassbar viel in deren Gesichtern lesen lassen. Die Anstrengung, der Schmerz, die Ernsthaftigkeit, die Verletzlichkeit, aber auch die Verbundenheit mit der Region, der Stolz, die Kraft und das Glück, Teil dieser überwältigenden Landschaften zu sein, springen einen förmlich an aus diesen Bildern.

But now to the essential: the pictures. The photographs – all in black and white – in this edition of the book from 2016 were all taken on Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands in the years between 1986 and 2015. And – contrary to what the title might suggest – they are not close-up portraits of Nordic faces with weather-tanned skin. Rather, they are emotionally super-close images that, in a documentary style – usually photographed with a wide angle lens – place people in the context of their surroundings and their lives, while at the same time allowing an incredible amount to be read in their faces. The effort, the pain, the seriousness, the vulnerability, but also the attachment to the region, the pride, the strength and the happiness of being part of these overwhelming landscapes literally leap to the eye out of these pictures.

Unnötig zu erwähnen, dass Dinge wie der heute gelebte Pixelwahn oder wenig hilfreiche Auflösungs- oder Bokehdiskussionen in diesem Buch ebenso wenig Platz haben wie die üblichen Verdächtigen der fotografischen Regeln. Die Bilder sind oft unscharf, verwackelt und total grobkörnig. Und die Kompositionen sind eben so, wie sie sein müssen: nah, direkt, frontal und schief. Sprich: ehrlich und unfassbar kraftvoll.

Needless to say, things like today’s pixel madness or rarely helpful resolution or bokeh discussions have as little place in this book as the usual suspects of photographic rules. The images are often unsharp, blurred and totally grained. And the compositions are just the way they have to be: close, direct, frontal and crooked. In other words: honest and incredibly powerful.

Wer sich für großartige Dokumentarfotografie begeistern kann oder wem der Norden generell sehr am Herzen liegt, der wird diesen Bildband lieben. Und wer zudem neben den Bildern, die selbst schon herausragende Geschichten erzählen, auch noch an den Hintergründen interessiert ist, wird sich darüber freuen, dass der Autor auch dies bedient. Es gibt jeweils zu jeder der drei Regionen ein Kapitel “Behind the Faces”, in dem etwas über die Menschen auf den Fotos erzählt wird

Anyone who is enthusiastic about great documentary photography or who generally cares a lot about the North will love this photo book. And if you’re interested in the background to the pictures, which themselves tell outstanding stories, you’ll be pleased to know that the author also serves this purpose. For each of the three regions there is a chapter “Behind the Faces” in which something is told about the people in the photos.

Also, der Winter kommt. Tee kochen, die warme Decke um die Füße schlingen und sich in der warmen Wohnung an diesem Buch erfreuen!
