Thoughts on Photography | #5 – Opportunities (1)

I recently decided that I would like to start another very short column in addition to the book reviews – and I’m calling it ‘Thoughts on Photography’. Here, I will share a few personal thoughts on photographic topics from time to time – with as little text as possible (max. 3 minutes reading time) and few example images – perhaps just one. There will be no logical or strictly sequential order to the topics. But perhaps some inspiring or even controversial thoughts over the time… we will see. Feel free to share your thoughts with me…

#5 – Opportunities (1)

You have to work and you’re tired? The weather is awful? It’s dark and cold? Absolutely no opportunity to take photos, right?

Wrong!

The perfect opportunity for starting a visual story 😂

I know it sounds easier than it is. And yes, the ‘take your camera with you everywhere you go’ advice that comes thick and fast from half of all influencer YouTube tip channels can be annoying at times. And you really don’t have to take it literally and soooo seriously. But there is some truth to it. And it can lead to you taking pictures in the most incredible moments.

My example today is a trip to the office – by car, for once. It was winter, it was dark, and the weather was, to put it kindly, miserable. But despite these conditions, which are really not ideal for photographers – hey, there’s always light. There are always shapes. And there are always things you only see when you look.

And you have to seize these opportunities. Which brings us back to taking your camera with you…

There is a saying in German: ‘There is no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.’ Perhaps it could be modified to: ‘There is no such thing as bad weather, only excuses for not taking photographs.’ Or something similar…

Bad weather makes for good photography.

There is always light somewhere – go out and shoot!

  • Hi Peter,
    This is so true!
I tell my students in the photo class this every time.
Can I make use of you’re statement about the German saying?
    Kind regards,
    Martien

    • Hi Martien,

Unfortunately, I don’t always follow this rule either… even though I often have my camera with me.

And of course you can use that modified German saying… Although, at 1 degree and with constant rain and storm, I wouldn’t agree with it in every situation and mood. But you don’t have to mention that… 😉

      Peter
