In dieser Kolumne stelle ich von Zeit zu Zeit einen Bildband vor, welcher mir sehr am Herzen liegt. Dabei handelt es sich nicht – oder nicht zwangsläufig – um eine Neuerscheinung. Es ist einfach ein Buch, welches mir irgendwie in die Hände gefallen ist und das ich Anderen gerne nahelegen möchte.

In this column I present from time to time a photo book that is very close to my heart. It is not – or not necessarily – a new release. It is simply a book that somehow came into my hands and that I would like to suggest to others.

Es ist nun erschreckenderweise schon ein ganzes Jahr her, seit ich hier das letzte Fotobuch vorgestellt habe. Manchmal steht am Ende der verfügbaren Zeit so viel anderes auf der To-do-Liste, was noch dringend zu erledigen ist. Zum Glück bedeutet dies nicht, dass ich in der verbliebenen Zeit nicht doch hier und da ein neues Fotobuch entdeckt hätte. Ich möchte diese Serie nun endlich wiederbeleben und beginne mit dem wahrscheinlich bisher wichtigsten Werk der jungen philippinischen Straßenfotografin Xyza Cruz Bacani: We Are Like Air.

Shockingly, it is already a whole year ago, since I presented the last photo book here. Sometimes, at the end of the available time, there is so much more on the to-do list, which has to be done urgently. Fortunately, this does not mean that I did not discover a new photo book here and there in the remaining time. I would like to finally revive this series and start with probably the most important work so far of the young Filipino street photographer Xyza Cruz Bacani: We Are Like Air.

Um es vorwegzunehmen: es ist ein sehr persönliches Buch, und kein einfaches dazu. In gewisser Weise ist es die fotografische Aufarbeitung eines wichtigen Teils im Leben von Xyza Cruz Bacani. Aber dieses Buch ist noch weit mehr. Es ist einerseits ein Buch über Migration und gleichzeitig ein intimes und intensives Portrait über Menschen – größtenteils Frauen – die alle eine Gemeinsamkeit haben: sie arbeiten unter schwierigen Bedingungen als Haushaltshilfen in anderen Familien. Intim allein deshalb, weil der Ausgangspunkt dieser Geschichte ihre eigene Familie – vor allem ihre Mutter – darstellt.

To anticipate: it is a very personal book, and not an easy one either. In a way, it is the photographic reappraisal of an important part of Xyza Cruz Bacani’s life. But this book is much more. It’s on the one hand a book about migration and at the same time an intimate and intense portrait of people – mostly women – who all have one thing in common: they work under difficult conditions as domestic worker in other families. Intimate simply because the starting point of this story is her own family – especially her mother.

Bacani, geboren 1987 auf den Philippinen, ist selbst die Tochter einer dieser Haushaltshilfen, wie es sie weltweit zu Hundertausenden – vielleicht sogar Millionen – gibt. Sie lebt und arbeitet in Hong Kong – und die Geschichten, die sie in diesem Buch erzählt, spielen auch dort.

Bacani, born on the Philippines in 1987, is herself the daughter of one of these domestic workers, as there are hundreds of thousands – maybe even millions – of them worldwide. She lives and works in Hong Kong – and the stories she tells in this book take place there as well.

Ihre Mutter Georgia ging in den 90er Jahren nach Singapur und kam schließlich 1999 nach Hong Kong. Xyza selbst hat zehn Jahre als Haushalthilfe in zweiter Generation gearbeitet. Es ist also nicht nur ein Projekt einer (heutigen) Fotografin, sondern es sind Bilder betrachtet mit den Augen einer Insiderin. Das macht sie zu etwas Besonderem. Und teilweise so schmerzlich nah…

Her mother Georgia went to Singapore in the 90s and finally came to Hong Kong in 1999. Xyza herself worked for ten years as a second-generation domestic worker. So, it is not just a project of a (today’s) photographer, but pictures seen through the eyes of an insider. This makes them something so special. And sometimes so painfully close…

Dieser Buch erinnert uns daran, dass Licht und Komposition nicht die einzigen beiden wichtigen Elemente von guten Bildern sind: das Drittte ist der Inhalt. Gerade in der Dokumentarfotografie kommt es darauf an, eine Geschichte zu haben, die man erzählen kann. Und Bacani hat genügend Geschichten zu erzählen.

This book reminds us that lighting and composition are not the only two important elements of good pictures: the third one is content. Especially in documentary photography it is important to have a story to tell. And Bacani has enough stories to tell.

Ich will hier nicht zu viel erzählen, zumal die Texte in dem Buch diesen Part bereits übernehmen. Und die Bilder erzählen ohnehin ihre eigenen Geschichten…

I don’t want to tell too much here, especially since the texts in the book already take over this part. And the pictures tell their own stories anyway…

Eine Sache sollte dem aufmerksamen Leser aber bereits aufgefallen sein: Xyza Cruz Bacani ist heute Fotografin. Das heißt, sie hat es geschafft, aus diesem Teufelskreis aus Armuts- und Arbeitsmigration und komplexer, sozialer Abhängigkeit von anderen auszubrechen. Das ist auch eine Botschaft dieses Buches.

One thing, however, should already have caught the attention of the attentive reader: Xyza Cruz Bacani is now a photographer. That means, she has managed to break out of this vicious circle of poverty and labour migration and complex, social dependence on others. That is also a message of this book.

Das alles macht dieses Buch und seine Bilder so großartig und so authentisch. Und aus meiner Sicht zu einer Pflichtlektüre nicht nur für Fotobegeisterte, sondern für alle Menschen, die an der Welt als solcher interessiert sind. Und die wie ich davon ausgehen, dass wir die Welt zu einem besseren Ort machen können, wenn wir wenigsten beginnen hinzusehen und zuzuhören…

All this makes this book and its pictures so great and so authentic. And from my point of view it is a must read not only for photo enthusiasts, but for all people who are interested in the world as such. And who like me believe that we can make the world a better place if we at least start to look and listen…
