In dieser Kolumne stelle ich von Zeit zu Zeit einen Bildband vor, welcher mir sehr am Herzen liegt. Dabei handelt es sich nicht – oder nicht zwangsläufig – um eine Neuerscheinung. Es ist einfach ein Buch, welches mir irgendwie in die Hände gefallen ist und das ich Anderen gerne nahelegen möchte.

In this column I present from time to time a photo book that is very close to my heart. It is not – or not necessarily – a new release. It is simply a book that somehow came into my hands and that I would like to suggest to others.

März/March 2023 – Unseen Saul Leiter

Im März schiebe ich mal einen Bildband ein, den ich nicht geplant habe. Ehrlich gesagt habe ich diesen bis vor ein paar Tagen auch gar nicht besessen. Marco Wasser hatte mich im Februar bei meiner Vorstellung von Egglestons “Chromes” in den Kommentaren darauf gestoßen. Es handelt sich um den Bildband “Unseen Saul Leiter”. Natürlich ist dieser Bildband nicht direkt “von” ihm, denn er ist 2013 gestorben, aber mit seinen Bildern.

Für mich ist es mal eine spannende Entdeckung, die ich euch nicht vorenthalten möchte.

In March, I’m slipping in a photo book that I hadn’t planned. To be honest, I didn’t even own it until a few days ago. Marco Wasser had pointed it out to me in the comments in February when I introduced Eggleston’s “Chromes”. It is the photo book “Unseen Saul Leiter”. Of course, this photo book is not directly “by” him, because he died in 2013, but with his pictures.

For me, it’s an exciting discovery that I don’t want to withhold from you.

Über Saul Leiter/About Saul Leiter

Saul Leiter war ein US-amerikanischer Fotograf und Maler. Geboren 1923 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, hat er den größten Teil seinen Lebens und auch seines künstlerischen Schaffens in New York City verbracht. Er war ein relativ erfolgreicher Modefotograf, allerdings erlangte er seine (späte) Bekanntheit durch seine meist in Farbe aufgenommenen Straßenszenen der Stadt. Wirklich berühmt als Fotograf wurde er aber eigentlich erst 2006, als der Steidl Verlag seine erste Monographie “Early Colors” herausbrachte.

Saul Leiter hat recht früh – bereits in den 40er Jahren – mit der Farbfotografie begonnen und gilt daher heute auch als einer der Pioniere der Farbfotografie im Kunstbereich.

Saul Leiter was an US photographer and painter. Born in 1923 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he spent most of his life and artistic career in New York City. He was a relatively successful fashion photographer, though he gained his (late) notoriety for his city street scenes, mostly shot in colour. However, he only really became famous as a photographer in 2006, when Steidl Verlag published his first monograph, “Early Colors“.

Saul Leiter started colour photography quite early – as early as the 1940s – and is therefore also considered one of the pioneers of colour photography in the art world today.

Prolog/Prologue

Eigentlich bin ich auf dem Weg, mir mehr neue Sichtweisen und neue Fotografinnen und Fotografen zu erschließen. Ich kenne viele der sogenannten “Alten Meister” (zu oft waren es tatsächlich Männer) und deren Werke. Vor allem in der dokumentarischen Fotografie des 20. Jahrhunderts kenne ich mich auch recht gut aus. Das ist für mich auch gut so, aber die Welt dreht sich… und wie lautet doch gleich dieser kluge Spruch?

Der Kern des menschlichen Wesens bildet sich aus neuen Erfahrungen.

Actually, I’m on my way to open up more new perspectives and new photographers. I know many of the so-called “Old Masters” (too often they were actually men) and their works. Especially in documentary photography of the 20th century, I also know my way around quite well. That’s a good thing for me, but the world turns… and what is that clever saying?

The core of mans’ spirit comes from new experiences.

Und nun also doch wieder jemand, der 1923 geboren wurde und eher die Fotografie der 60er bis 90er Jahre des letzten Jahrhunderts mitgeprägt hat? Warum das? Ich versuche es gleich mal zu begründen – außerhalb der Tatsache, dass ich das Buch erst gerade gekauft habe. Und zwar mit nur einem Satz: Es ist manchmal vielleicht wichtiger und gewinnbringender, etwas Altes neu zu entdecken und zu verstehen als etwas ganz Neues ständig zu suchen.

And now, once again, someone who was born in 1923 and rather helped define the photography of the 60s to 90s of the last century? Why is that? I’ll try to justify it right away – outside the fact that I just bought the book. In just one sentence: it is sometimes perhaps more important and profitable to rediscover and understand something old than to constantly search for something completely new.

Der Bildband/The Photo Book

Nach seinem Tod 2013 widmeten sich Leiters langjährige enge Freundin Margit Erb sowie ihr Ehemann Michael Parillo mit der neugegründeten Saul Leiter Foundation einer Mammutaufgabe. Ziel war es, das vor allem als Dias vorliegende, größtenteils gar nicht bekannte Vermächtnis von Saul Leiter zu ordnen und zu katalogisieren. Bei einer geschätzten Zahl von 40 bis 60 Tausend Dias – verstaut meist in Kartons – keine so leichte Aufgabe. Wer einen Einblick in die Welt des späten Saul Leiter und in sein – sagen wir mal liebevoll – künstlerisches Chaos werfen möchte, dem sei die Dokumentation “In No Great Hurry” von Tomas Leach empfohlen.

After his death in 2013, Leiter’s close friend of many years, Margit Erb, and her husband Michael Parillo dedicated themselves to a mammoth task with the newly founded Saul Leiter Foundation. The aim was to organise and catalogue Saul Leiter’s legacy, which was mainly available in the form of slides and was largely unknown. With an estimated number of 40 to 60 thousand slides – mostly stowed away in boxes – not such an easy task. If you want to take a look at the world of the late Saul Leiter and his – let’s say affectionately – artistic chaos, I recommend the documentary “In No Great Hurry” by Tomas Leach.

Ein Leben in gleichen Viertel/A life in the same neighbourhood

Als ein kleines Zwischenergebnis ist nun dieses Buch entstanden. 76 noch nie veröffentlichte Bilder des Künstlers – entstanden größtenteils zwischen 1948 und 1966 – zeigen den frühen Saul Leitner in Farbe. Und sie zeigen das, wofür ihm offensichtlich in seinem privaten Fotografenleben außerhalb der Modefotografie wichtig war. Alltägliche Szenen, meist in seiner unmittelbaren Umgebung in seinem Viertel in New York aufgenommen.

Seine Bilder, oft schräg, eher aus dem Verborgenen, mit längerer Brennweite und durch Glasscheiben oder Zaungitter aufgenommen, haben ihre sehr eigene Wirkung und Bildsprache.

As a small preliminary result, this book has now been produced. 76 never-before-published pictures by the artist – mostly taken between 1948 and 1966 – show the early Saul Leitner in colour. And they show what was obviously important to him in his private photographic life outside fashion photography. Everyday scenes, mostly shot in his immediate surroundings in his neighbourhood in New York.

His pictures, often crooked, rather hidden, taken with a longer focal length and through panes of glass or fencing, have their very own effect and visual language.

Über die Bedeutung von Regentropfen/On the importance of raindrops

Saul Leiter war offenbar ein ziemlich unprätentiöser Mensch mit einen feinen Sinn für Humor. In der oben bereits erwähnten Dokumentation hat er dies an einer Stelle selbst sehr schön zum Ausdruck gebracht:

Ein mit Regentropfen bedecktes Fenster interessiert mich mehr als das Foto einer berühmten Person.

Saul Leiter was apparently a rather unpretentious person with a fine sense of humour. In the documentary already mentioned above, he himself expressed this very nicely at one point:

A window covered with raindrops interests me more than a photograph of a famous person.

Wie ich finde, eine für einen Modefotografen irgendwie bemerkenswerte Aussage. Und eine, die viel über den Menschen und Fotografen Saul Leiter verrät.

In my opinion, a somehow remarkable statement for a fashion photographer. And one that reveals a lot about the person and photographer Saul Leiter.

Ein Auge für Formen und Farben/An eye for shape and colour

Was nehme ich mit von Unseen Saul Leiter?

1. Wie immer Neugier und Freude daran, andere Sichtweisen zu entdecken und mich inspirieren zu lassen.
2. Seinen Blick für Farbe und die fast gemäldeartige Umsetzung in vielen seiner Bilder.
3. Dass es im Alltäglichen um die Ecke immer etwas zu entdecken gibt, wenn man nur die Augen offenhält und ggf. seine Perspektive ändert.
4. Dass es zum Fotografieren kein schlechtes Wetter gibt.
5. Dass man auch im Hochformat fotografieren kann. 😉

Der fünfte Punkt klingt vielleicht komisch, aber seht euch mal meine Bilder an. Man könnte meinen, dass meine Kameras gar nicht im Hochformat Bilder aufnehmen können. Das ist eine Sache, die ich wirklich faszinierend finde an Saul Leiter – er fotografiert fast alles im Hochformat.

What do I take with me from Unseen Saul Leiter?

1. As always, curiosity and the joy of discovering other perspectives and being inspired.
2. His eye for colour and the almost painting-like realisation in many of his pictures.
3. That there is always something to discover in the everyday around the corner, if you just keep your eyes open and change your perspective if necessary.
4. That there is no such thing as bad weather for photography.
5. That you can also photograph in portrait format 😉

The fifth point may sound strange, but take a look at my pictures. You might think that my cameras can’t take pictures in portrait format at all. That’s one thing I find really fascinating about Saul Leiter – he shoots almost everything in portrait format.

Abschließende Worte/Final Words

Ich tue mich nicht ganz leicht damit, Saul Leiter für mich selbst einzuordnen. Ich bin froh, mir das Buch gekauft, die Dokumentation angesehen und mich mit ihm intensiver beschäftigt zu haben – keine Frage. Und wie fast immer werde ich auch hier etwas an Inspiration mitnehmen. Einige seiner Bilder finde ich tatsächlich auch großartig und würde sie mir sogar in die Wohnung hängen. Besonders das Spiel mit den Farben gefällt mir bei ihm, und die kleinen subtilen Details, die auf seine außergewöhnliche Beobachtungsgabe hinweisen.

It is not easy for me to classify Saul Leiter for myself. I’m glad I bought the book, watched the documentary and got to know him better – no question about that. And as almost always, I will take away some inspiration. I actually find some of his pictures great too and would even hang them in my flat. I especially like the way he plays with colours, and the small subtle details that point to his extraordinary powers of observation.

Mich persönlich inspiriert Saul Leiter nicht ganz so stark wie es vielleicht William Eggleson, Stephen Shore oder Harry Gruyaert tun. Das liegt möglicherweise daran, dass ich eher nur mit einer bestimmten Art seiner Bilder wirklich viel anfangen kann – eben den subtilen, fast gemalten Aufnahmen. Dafür aber dann umso mehr, denn darin versinke ich dann eine Weile und entdecke dabei viele kleine Details, die wundervoll sind.

Personally, Saul Leiter does not inspire me as much as William Eggleson, Stephen Shore or Harry Gruyaert. Perhaps this is because there is only one particular type of image that I can really relate to – the subtle, almost painted images. But then all the more so, because I sink into them for a while and discover many small details that are wonderful.

Lasst euch Zeit…/Keep your time…

Wer bereit ist, so eine kleine Reise anzutreten und sich auch wirklich damit beschäftigen möchte, der wird nicht enttäuscht sein. Aber nehmt euch Zeit, denn der Titel der Dokumentation hat schon seinen tieferen Sinn: In No Great Hurry. 🙂

Those who are willing to embark on such a little journey and really want to get into it will not be disappointed. But take your time, because the title of the documentary already has its deeper meaning: In No Great Hurry. 🙂
