In dieser Kolumne stelle ich von Zeit zu Zeit einen Bildband vor, welcher mir sehr am Herzen liegt. Dabei handelt es sich nicht – oder nicht zwangsläufig – um eine Neuerscheinung. Es ist einfach ein Buch, welches mir irgendwie in die Hände gefallen ist und das ich Anderen gerne nahelegen möchte.

In this column I present from time to time a photo book that is very close to my heart. It is not – or not necessarily – a new release. It is simply a book that somehow came into my hands and that I would like to suggest to others.

April 2023 – Harry Gruyaert | Between Worlds

Eigentlich wollte ich hier im Blog gar nicht eine größere Serie über die (für mich wichtigen) Wegbereiter der Farbfotografie anfangen. Nun ist es aber doch irgendwie so gekommen und ich kremple meine Pläne etwas um. Nach Egglestons “Chromes” und “Unseen Saul Leiter” nun also quasi als dritten Teil Harry Gruyaerts “Between Worlds” aus dem Verlag Thames and Hudson

Um es aber doch ein wenig unvorhersehbarer und spannender zu machen, komme ich hier nicht mit einer Retrospektive oder den Klassikern um die Ecke. Sondern eher mit einem Buch, was aus meiner Sicht eher ungewöhnlich ist für Gruyaert. Denn es zeichnet sich durch etwas aus, was eigentlich gar nicht so seine Sache ist: eine Geschichte. Na ja, ganz so einfach ist das dann auch wieder nicht, aber später mehr dazu…

Actually, I didn’t want to start a larger series here on the blog about the (for me important) pioneers of colour photography. But somehow it has come to this, and I am rearranging my plans a little. After Eggleston’s “Chromes” and “Unseen Saul Leiter“, Harry Gruyaert’s “Between Worlds”, published by Thames and Hudson, is now the third part, so to speak.

But to make it a little more unpredictable and exciting, I’m not coming around the corner with a retrospective or the classics. But rather with a book, which in my view is rather unusual for Gruyaert. For it is characterised by something that is not really his thing: a story. Well, it’s not quite that simple, but more about that later…

Über Harry Gruyaert/About Harry Gruyaert

Harry Gruyaert ist ein belgischer Fotograf und Mitglied der Fotoagentur Magnum Photos. 1941 in Antwerpen/Belgien geboren, wurde er zunächst vor allem bekannt durch seine Arbeiten in Marokko und Indien in den 70er und 80er Jahren. Weiteres größeres Aufsehen erhielt er durch den – leider vergriffenen – Doppelband “East/West“. In diesem Werk zeigt er jeweils Bilder aus den USA (Los Angeles/Las Vegas) und Russland (vor allem aus Moskau).

Auch wenn meine Verbindung zu Marokko durchaus groß ist, bin ich auf Harry Gruyaert aber aus einem anderen Grund aufmerksam geworden: Farbe! Wer sich näher mit ihm beschäftigt und sich auch die Beispiele hier anschaut, wird schnell verstehen warum. Gruyaert steht wie kaum ein anderer für Farbe im Bild – satt, grell, leuchtend. In dieser Beziehung ist Gruyaert wirklich fotografisch mein Held.

Harry Gruyaert is a Belgian photographer and member of the Magnum Photo cooperative. Born in Antwerp, Belgium in 1941, he initially became known for his work in Morocco and India in the 1970s and 1980s. He attracted further attention with his double volume “East/West“, which is unfortunately out of print. In this work, he shows pictures from the USA (Los Angeles/Las Vegas) and Russia (especially Moscow).

Even though I have a strong connection to Morocco (German only), I became aware of Harry Gruyaert for a different reason: Colour! If you take a closer look at him and also at the examples here, you will quickly understand why. Gruyaert stands for colour in the image like hardly anyone else – rich, glaring, luminous. In this respect, Gruyaert is really my hero photographically.

Between Worlds

Prolog/Prologue

Wie oben schon angedeutet, ist “Between Worlds” ein eher ungewöhnlicher Bildband von Harry Gruyaert. Nein, keine Angst… kein Schwarz-Weiß. Farbe ist auch hier eines der zentralen Elemente, wenn nicht wie gewohnt das zentrale Element schlechthin. Ungewöhnlich ist eher, dass alle Bilder in diesem Buch etwas gemein haben – also zusammen eine Geschichte erzählen, obwohl sich Gruyaert ja dagegen wert, in Bildern Geschichten zu erzählen (siehe auch das Zitat weiter unten).

As already indicated above, “Between Worlds” is a rather unusual photo book by Harry Gruyaert. No, don’t worry… no black and white. Colour is one of the central elements here too, if not the central element par excellence as usual. What is rather unusual is that all the pictures in this book have something in common – they tell a story together, although Gruyaert is against telling stories in pictures (see also the quote below).

Der Bildband/The Photo Book

In “Between Worlds” nimmt uns Harry Gruyaert in 75 ganzseitigen Bildern mit auf eine spannende Reise. Eine Reise, völlig unabhängig von Raum un Zeit. Es geht nicht per se um all die spannenden Orte auf der Welt, die Gruyaert bekanntermaßen besucht und intensiv fotografiert hat. Er, der sich so ungern gefangen fühlt und sehr selten drinnen fotografiert, nimmt uns mit an die Grenzen zwischen drinnen und draußen. Das aber hat es wirklich in sich, graphisch, stilistisch und natürlich wie immer visuell.

In “Between Worlds”, Harry Gruyaert takes us on an exciting journey in 75 full-page pictures. A journey completely independent of space and time. It is not inherently about all the exciting places in the world that Gruyaert is known to have visited and photographed intensively. He, who so dislikes feeling trapped and very rarely photographs indoors, takes us to the borders between indoors and outdoors. But this really packs a punch, graphically, stylistically and of course, as always, visually.

Über Formen und Farbe/About Shapes and Colour

So sehr mich Eggleston (und vielleicht Stephen Shore) stilistisch geprägt und begeistert haben, so sehr inspiriert mich Gruyaert als Meister von Form und Farbe. Er sah sich nie wirklich als Fotojournalist, was ihn wohl zumindest am Anfang bei Magnum eher zu einem Außenseiter machte. Weniger auf der Suche nach einer Story steht er viel mehr für die Suche nach dem besonderen Licht – und damit auch oft den besonderen Farben.

Es gibt keine Geschichte. Es ist nur eine Frage von Formen und Licht.

Harry Gruyaert

As much as Eggleston (and perhaps Stephen Shore) have influenced and inspired me stylistically, Gruyaert inspires me as a master of shape and colour. He never really saw himself as a photojournalist, which probably made him more of an outsider at Magnum, at least in the beginning. Less in search of a story, he stands much more for the search for the special light – and thus often the special colours.

There is no story. It’s just a question of shapes and light.

Diese Aussage von Gruyaert unterstützt jedoch genau das, was viele – mich eingeschlossen – oft getan haben: seine Arbeiten auf Form und vor allem Farbe zu reduzieren. Zum Glück ist nun dieses Buch erschienen, welches auch mir eine ganz andere Perspektive auf Gruyaert eröffnet. Eine Perspektive, welche deutlich komplexer und vielseitiger ist.

However, this statement by Gruyaert supports exactly what many – myself included – have often done: reduce his works to form and above all colour. Fortunately, this book has now been published, which also opens up a completely different perspective on Gruyaert for me. A perspective that is clearly more complex and versatile.

Über Grenzen und Komplexität/About thesholds and complexity

Ja, auch in den in “Between Worlds” gezeigten Bilden spielen Form und Farbe natürlich eine wichtige Rolle. Aber die Komplexität der Kompositionen geht oft weit darüber hinaus. Zum einen wird Gruyaert in diesen Bildern zu einem Grenzgänger. Einem Grenzgänger zwischen innen und außen – sowohl real als auch metaphorisch gesehen. Er überwindet diese Grenze nur durch die Fotografie, oder wie es David Company in seiner hervorragenden kurzen Abhandlung in dem Buch selbst sagt – durch das Licht.

Zurückkommend auf meine obige Andeutung zur gemeinsamen Geschichte dieser Bilder ist das nämlich das Verbindende: die Überschreitung einer Grenze. Meist von außen nach innen, in einigen Fällen aber auch von innen nach außen. Entstanden sind dabei oftmals Multi-Layer-Aufnahmen von höchster Komplexität, in denen man sich visuell verlieren kann. Und in denen der Betrachter auch mehrere eigene Geschichten hineininterpretieren kann – zwischen den Welten.

Of course, form and colour play an important role in the photographs shown in “Between Worlds”. But the complexity of the compositions often goes far beyond that. For one thing, Gruyaert becomes a border crosser in these pictures. A border crosser between inside and outside – both real and metaphorical. He overcomes this threshold only through photography, or as David Company puts it in his excellent short essay in the book itself – through light.

Returning to my suggestion above about the common story of these images, this is in fact what unites them: the crossing of a threshold. Mostly from the outside in, but in some cases also from the inside out. The result are often multi-layered images of the highest complexity, in which one can lose oneself visually. And in which the viewer can also interpret several stories of his or her own – between worlds.

Abschließende Worte/Final Words

“Between Worlds” ist meiner Ansicht nach das spannendste Buch mit den Arbeiten von Harry Gruyaert. Man bekommt darin sozusagen den komprimierten Gruyaert zu sehen. Den, der die Welt fotografiert. Und den, der die satten Farben und klaren Formen zu Bildern komponiert. Sowie den, der immer auf der Suche nach dem perfekten Licht ist.

Und nun auch noch den, der uns dazu bringt, Geschichten zwischen den Formen, den Farben und dem Licht zu suchen. Und das in Bildern, die danach schreien, dass sie lange betrachtet werden. Ich bin jetzt schon auf der Suche nach einer Gruyaert-Ausstellung. Da wir noch diesen Monat nach Antwerpen fahren, hoffe ich mal, dass da was geht…

“Between Worlds” is, in my opinion, the most exciting book of Harry Gruyaert’s work. You get to see the condensed Gruyaert, so to speak. The one who photographs the world. And the one who composes the rich colours and clear shapes into pictures. As well as the one who is always on the lookout for the perfect light.

And now also the one who makes us look for stories between the shapes, the colours and the light. And that in pictures that cry out to be looked at for a long time. I’m already on the lookout for a Gruyaert exhibition. Since we’re going to Antwerp this month, I hope something will come up…

Die thematische Eingrenzung in diesem Bildband ist damit aber zugleich der einzige kleine Nachteil. Zumindest für diejenigen, die etwas breiter das Werk von Harry Gruyaert kennenlernen wollten. Denjenigen empfehle ich den Bildband “Harry Gruyaert“, ebenfalls erschienen bei Thames & Hudson.

However, the thematic limitation in this photo book is at the same time the only small disadvantage. At least for those who wanted to get to know Harry Gruyaert’s work a little better. For those, I recommend the photo book “Harry Gruyaert“, also published by Thames & Hudson.
